I Don't Get It

My office building has a room reserved for lactating moms. It's a lovely little room with chairs and a couch and pretty pictures of the Capitol grounds. There are two hospital-grade pumps, a small refrigerator, and over the past few months someone has been bringing in parenting magazines.

The women who use the room and those who administer the facility communicate via notes. For example, instructions on how to use the complicated electronic lock are left on a little notepad. You'll find a message if something is broken or missing.

Today, I saw this note:

Which I think is strange. I'm not opposed to hand sanitizer, necessarily, but do we need it
in a room with a sink?

A sink, with running water. And soap.

Really? Hand sanitizer? What am I missing here?

To sanitize her nipples of course. It's a little hard to stick your boob under a faucet. And god forbid her wettle precious get a weetle germ from the skin of her own body. Much better to let a gel of alcohol and chemicals perchance get into the milk.

People are CRAZY about the hand sanitizer. They don't realize some germs are GOOD.
Of course you don't need hand sanitizer in a room with a sink.
This person's child(ren) will end up really sick some day because they'll have no natural defense mechanism built up. Poor, poor child.

I've been to visit your little room. I don't remember it having a nurse on staff. Nor was anyone nursing in there, so the note addressed to a "Nurse" I find even more confusing.

You can SEE the soap. It is RIGHT THERE.

And... you guys get a nurse?

I think it's so awesome that you guys have your own room.

I don't get hand sanitizer -- it always leaves me feeling like I need to go wash my hands.

We get this stupid ad on TV telling you to buy sanitizer because you can't rely on your kids washing their hands after going to the toilet.

Which always makes me shout "Teach yer bloody kids to washing their effin hands then, you bloody great nong!"

Aaaargh!! You have to share a pump with OTHER PEOPLE!?!?!?

I pray to God that I just misunderstand how those things work ... there is one in there all the time that many people use? That seriously grosses me out.

Compulsive first time mom?

(wait, even when I was a compulsive first time mom I favored hand-washing over sanitizer.)

No idea.

Anne: They're hospital-grade pumps; so while the machine is shared, the parts that actually touch you are not.
